How to Care for Embroidered Clothes

Why Embroidery Needs Special Care
Embroidery adds texture and detail to garments, but the raised threads are vulnerable to snagging, pulling, and distortion during washing. The backing fabric can also pucker if washed incorrectly. With the right approach, embroidered clothes can be washed safely and kept looking sharp for years.
Step 1: Check the Care Label
Always check the garment's care label first. Many embroidered garments are hand-wash or dry-clean only. If the label says dry clean, follow it — especially for heavily embroidered or structured pieces.
Hand Washing (Recommended for Most Embroidered Garments)
- Turn the garment inside out to protect the embroidery during washing.
- Fill a basin with cool water and add a small amount of gentle detergent.
- Submerge and gently agitate by hand — don't scrub the embroidered areas.
- Soak for no more than 10 minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly in cool water.
- Press water out gently — never wring, which can distort the embroidery threads.
- Lay flat on a clean towel to dry, reshaping the embroidered areas gently while damp.
Machine Washing (For Sturdy Embroidered Cotton)
If the care label permits machine washing:
- Turn inside out.
- Place in a mesh laundry bag to prevent snagging.
- Use the delicate cycle with cold water.
- Use a gentle detergent.
- Air dry — never tumble dry embroidered garments.
Drying and Ironing
- Air dry flat or on a padded hanger.
- Never tumble dry — heat and tumbling distort embroidery threads.
- If ironing is needed, iron on the reverse side with a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric. Never iron directly on embroidery — it flattens the raised texture.
Storing Embroidered Clothes
- Fold carefully to avoid creasing embroidered areas.
- Store flat when possible rather than hanging — the weight of the garment can distort embroidery over time.
- Place acid-free tissue paper between folds to prevent thread impressions.
Final Thoughts
Hand washing inside out is the safest approach for most embroidered garments. A mesh laundry bag makes machine washing safer for sturdier pieces. The key rules: never wring, never tumble dry, and never iron directly on the embroidery.
