How to Care for Beaded Garments
Share
Why Beaded Garments Need Extra Care
Beads are attached to fabric with thread or adhesive, and both can be damaged by water, heat, and agitation. Machine washing beaded garments risks breaking threads, losing beads, and scratching or cracking the beads themselves. Most beaded garments require hand washing or dry cleaning.
Step 1: Assess the Beading
Before washing, check how the beads are attached:
- Sewn beads: More durable, can usually be hand washed carefully.
- Glued beads: Water can dissolve the adhesive — dry cleaning is safer.
- Heavily beaded garments (evening wear, formal pieces): Dry clean only.
Hand Washing Beaded Garments
- Turn the garment inside out.
- Fill a basin with cool water and a small amount of gentle detergent.
- Submerge and gently swish — don't agitate or scrub the beaded areas.
- Soak for no more than 5–10 minutes.
- Rinse gently in cool water.
- Support the full weight of the garment when lifting — wet beaded garments are heavy and the weight can pull threads.
- Press water out gently with a towel — never wring.
- Lay flat to dry on a clean towel.
Machine Washing (Only If Care Label Permits)
If the care label permits machine washing:
- Turn inside out.
- Place in a mesh laundry bag to protect beads from snagging and reduce impact.
- Use the most delicate cycle available with cold water.
- Use a small amount of gentle detergent.
- Air dry flat — never tumble dry.
Drying and Storage
- Always air dry flat — hanging a wet beaded garment puts stress on the threads holding the beads.
- Keep away from direct sunlight — UV light can fade colored beads and weaken threads.
- Store flat in a breathable bag or wrapped in acid-free tissue paper.
- Don't stack heavy items on top of beaded garments in storage.
Spot Cleaning
For minor marks, spot cleaning is safer than full washing. Dampen a clean cloth with cool water and a tiny amount of gentle detergent. Dab gently at the mark — don't rub. Allow to air dry.
Final Thoughts
The safest approach for most beaded garments is hand washing in cool water or professional dry cleaning for heavily beaded pieces. The key rules: never wring, never tumble dry, always dry flat, and support the full weight of the garment when wet.
