How to Balance Washing Machine Load

How to Balance Washing Machine Load

Why Load Balance Matters

An unbalanced washing machine load is the most common cause of violent shaking, loud banging, and spin cycle failures. Modern machines have sensors that detect imbalance and reduce or stop the spin cycle to prevent damage — which leaves clothes soaking wet. Loading correctly prevents all of these problems.

The Golden Rules of Load Balancing

  • Never wash a single heavy item alone — one large towel, one pair of jeans, or one hoodie will always cause imbalance. Add similar items to balance the weight
  • Mix item sizes — combine large items (sheets, towels) with smaller items (t-shirts, socks) in the same load for natural balance
  • Don't overload — clothes should fill the drum loosely; you should be able to fit your hand on top of the load. Overloading prevents proper rinsing and causes imbalance
  • Don't underload — very small loads (1–2 items) also cause imbalance; add more items or use a smaller load setting

How to Load a Front Load Washer

  • Load clothes loosely into the drum — don't pack them in
  • Distribute items around the drum rather than piling them on one side
  • For bulky items like duvets or sleeping bags, make sure they're evenly distributed inside the drum before starting
  • Use a mesh laundry bag for small items like socks to prevent them from clumping together

How to Load a Top Load Washer

  • Distribute clothes evenly around the agitator — don't pile everything on one side
  • For HE top loaders (no agitator): spread clothes loosely around the drum in a ring shape
  • Alternate adding large and small items as you load

What to Do When the Machine Stops Mid-Cycle

If your machine stops or displays an imbalance error during the spin cycle:

  1. Open the door and redistribute the laundry evenly
  2. Remove some items if the machine is overloaded
  3. Close the door and restart the spin cycle
  4. If the machine continues to shake violently even with a balanced load, check that it's level and add anti-vibration pads

Items That Commonly Cause Imbalance

  • Single large towels or bath sheets
  • Single jeans or heavy trousers
  • Hoodies or sweatshirts washed alone
  • Duvets or comforters that bunch to one side
  • Sleeping bags

Always wash these items with other similar-weight items, or add towels to balance the load.
