Can Curtains Go in the Washing Machine?
Many curtains can be machine washed at home — but it depends on the fabric and lining. Washing the wrong curtains in the machine can cause shrinking, color bleeding, or damage to the lining. Always check the care label first.
Which Curtains Are Machine Washable?
- Safe to machine wash: Polyester, cotton, linen, and sheer curtains (without lining)
- Hand wash or dry clean: Velvet, silk, heavily lined curtains, blackout curtains with special coatings, and curtains labeled "dry clean only"
- Blackout curtains: Check the label carefully — the blackout lining may not be washable even if the outer fabric is
How to Machine Wash Curtains
- Remove from the rod and shake outside to remove loose dust before washing
- Check for hooks or rings — remove all metal hooks and rings before washing
- Place sheer or delicate curtains in a large mesh laundry bag to prevent tearing and snagging
- Wash one panel at a time if the machine is small — curtains need room to move
- Gentle cycle, cold water — cold prevents shrinking, especially for cotton and linen
- Small amount of mild liquid detergent
How to Dry Curtains Without Wrinkles
The best method: hang curtains back on the rod while still slightly damp. Gravity pulls out wrinkles as they dry — no ironing needed. If using a dryer, tumble dry on low and remove while still slightly damp, then hang immediately.
Freshening Curtains Between Washes
Between full washes, spray lightly with Febreze Fabric Refresher to neutralize cooking odors, pet smells, and everyday odors without washing. Vacuum monthly with an upholstery attachment to remove dust buildup.
