Why Is My Refrigerator Making a Knocking Noise?

A knocking noise from your refrigerator is less common than humming or buzzing, and it's more likely to indicate a specific mechanical issue. Here's how to diagnose the source of a refrigerator knocking noise and what to do about it.

Common Causes of Refrigerator Knocking Noises

1. Compressor Knocking

A knocking sound from the compressor — usually located at the back bottom of the fridge — can indicate the compressor is struggling or failing. This is one of the more serious causes of knocking.

Symptoms: Knocking from the back/bottom of the fridge, especially when the compressor starts or stops. May be accompanied by poor cooling.

Fix: Call a qualified appliance repair technician. Compressor issues require professional diagnosis.

2. Ice Maker Knocking

The ice maker can produce knocking sounds during its cycle — particularly when ice cubes drop into the ice bin or when the ice maker arm moves.

Symptoms: Knocking from the freezer area, coincides with ice maker activity, ice is being produced normally.

Normal if: The knocking is brief, occurs during ice production, and the fridge is cooling properly.

3. Pipes Knocking (Water Hammer)

If your fridge has a water dispenser or ice maker connected to a water supply, a knocking sound when the water valve opens or closes can be caused by water hammer — a pressure surge in the water line.

Symptoms: Knocking when the ice maker fills with water or when the water dispenser is used.

Fix: Install a water hammer arrestor on the water supply line. Check that the water supply line isn't kinked or under excessive pressure.

4. Loose or Vibrating Components

A loose drain pan, loose screws, or items stored on top of or inside the fridge can knock against the appliance during operation.

Symptoms: Knocking that seems to come from the top, sides, or inside the fridge.

Fix: Remove items from the top of the fridge. Check that the drain pan is seated properly. Check inside for loose shelves or bins. Tighten any visible loose screws on the back panel.

5. Refrigerant Flow

As refrigerant moves through the system, it can occasionally produce knocking or ticking sounds, especially when the system starts up after a period of inactivity.

Normal if: The knocking is brief, occurs only at startup, and the fridge is cooling properly.

6. Fridge Not Level

An unlevel refrigerator can cause the compressor and other components to vibrate unevenly, producing knocking sounds.

Fix: Use a spirit level to check if the fridge is level. Adjust the leveling feet at the bottom until it's stable and level.
