Normal Humming Sounds

Steady Hum from the Compressor

The compressor is the motor that drives the refrigeration cycle. A steady, low-pitched hum while the compressor is running is completely normal and expected. Most refrigerators produce a background hum of 40–45 decibels — roughly the level of a quiet library.

Normal if: The hum is steady, low-pitched, stops when the cooling cycle ends, and the fridge is cooling properly.

Hum from the Evaporator or Condenser Fan

Refrigerators have one or two fans that circulate air. A gentle hum from these fans during operation is normal.

Normal if: The hum is consistent and quiet, and the fridge is maintaining the correct temperature.

Hum from the Ice Maker

If your fridge has an ice maker, a low hum during ice production and water filling is normal.

  • Failing fan motor: The evaporator or condenser fan motor may be wearing out. If the hum is coming from inside the fridge or near the back/bottom, a fan motor may need replacement.
  • Water inlet valve: A high-pitched hum near the back of the fridge when the ice maker or water dispenser is active can indicate a partially clogged or failing water inlet valve.

Hum Accompanied by Poor Cooling

If the hum is accompanied by the fridge not cooling properly, the compressor may be struggling.

How to Reduce Normal Refrigerator Hum

  • Ensure the fridge is level — adjust leveling feet if needed.
