Why Is My Oven Making a Clicking Noise? Causes Explained

A clicking noise from your oven can be alarming — but in most cases, it's completely normal. Here's a guide to the different clicking sounds an oven can make, what causes them, and when you should be concerned.

Normal Clicking Sounds (Nothing to Worry About)

1. Gas Igniter Clicking During Startup (Gas Ovens)

When you turn on a gas oven, the igniter clicks rapidly to create a spark that lights the burner. This clicking lasts 5–30 seconds until the burner ignites, then stops. This is completely normal.

What you hear: Rapid clicking for a few seconds when the oven is first turned on, then silence once the burner lights.

2. Thermal Expansion Clicking

As the oven heats up, metal components — the oven walls, racks, and heating elements — expand. This expansion causes occasional clicking or popping sounds throughout the preheat cycle and during cooking. This is normal and harmless.

What you hear: Occasional single clicks or pops during heating, not continuous.

3. Relay Clicking (Electric Ovens)

Electric ovens use relays (electrical switches) on the control board to cycle the heating elements on and off. Each time a relay activates, it makes a soft click. You may hear this every few minutes as the oven cycles to maintain temperature.

What you hear: A soft, single click every few minutes during cooking — often accompanied by the heating element turning on or off.

4. Continuous Clicking That Won't Stop (Gas Ovens)

If the igniter keeps clicking continuously after the burner has lit — or keeps clicking when the oven is off — there's a problem.

Causes:

  • Moisture or food debris on the igniter or burner cap
  • Misaligned burner cap
  • Faulty igniter switch

Fix: Turn off the oven and let it cool. Clean around the igniter and burner cap with a dry cloth or soft brush. Make sure the burner cap is properly seated. If clicking continues after cleaning, the igniter switch may need replacement.

5. Loud Popping or Banging

Loud pops or bangs — louder than normal thermal expansion — can indicate a bake element arcing or failing.

Fix: Turn off the oven immediately. Inspect the bake element for visible damage (cracks, burn marks, blistering). A damaged element needs replacement before the oven is used again.

6. Clicking with No Ignition (Gas Ovens)

If the igniter clicks but the burner never lights, the igniter may be weak or the gas supply may be interrupted.

Fix: Check that the gas supply valve is fully open. If gas supply is confirmed, the igniter may be too weak to open the gas valve and needs replacement.

Quick Diagnosis Guide

Clicking Sound Likely Cause Action
Rapid clicking at startup (gas) Normal ignition None needed
Occasional single clicks during heating Normal thermal expansion or relay None needed
Continuous clicking after ignition Moisture or debris on igniter Clean igniter area
Clicking when oven is off Faulty igniter switch Replace switch
Loud pop or bang Bake element arcing Turn off, inspect element
Clicking with no ignition Weak igniter or no gas Check gas, replace igniter

Keep Your Oven in Good Shape

Regular cleaning prevents food debris from accumulating around the igniter and burner, reducing the risk of continuous clicking. The Weiman Glass & Ceramic Cooktop and Oven Cleaner Kit (amzn.to/4dJutxi) includes cleaning cream, scrubbing pads, and a scraper — effective on baked-on grease and safe for all oven surfaces.
