Why Is My Dishwasher Not Cleaning Properly? Causes and Fixes
Share
A dishwasher that leaves dishes dirty is one of the most frustrating appliance problems. Before you call a technician, work through this checklist — most causes are fixable at home without any tools.
1. Spray Arms Are Blocked or Clogged
The spray arms rotate and shoot water at your dishes. If they're blocked by a tall item or if the holes are clogged with food debris or mineral deposits, water can't reach all the dishes.
Fix: Remove the spray arms (they usually unscrew or unclip) and rinse them under running water. Use a toothpick or small brush to clear any clogged holes. Check that nothing in the loaded racks is blocking the arms from spinning.
2. Dishes Are Loaded Incorrectly
Nesting, overlapping, or blocking the spray arms prevents water from reaching dish surfaces. This is the most common cause of poor cleaning results.
Fix: Load dishes with dirty surfaces facing the spray arms. Don't nest bowls or stack plates. Give the spray arms a spin by hand before starting — they should rotate freely.
3. Wrong or Insufficient Detergent
Using too little detergent, the wrong type, or old detergent that has clumped or lost effectiveness will result in poor cleaning.
Fix: Use a quality pod detergent for consistent, pre-measured results. The Finish Powerball Dishwasher Pods (amzn.to/3RE929j) are reliable for everyday loads — plastic-free and pre-measured. Store powder or gel detergent in a cool, dry place and replace if it's clumped or more than 6 months old.
4. Dirty or Clogged Filter
Most modern dishwashers have a manual-clean filter at the bottom of the tub. When it's clogged with food debris, water can't circulate properly and dishes come out dirty — or with food particles redeposited on them.
Fix: Remove the filter (check your manual for location — usually twist and lift from the bottom of the tub). Rinse under warm water and scrub gently with a soft brush. Clean every 1–3 months.
5. Water Temperature Too Low
Dishwashers need hot water to activate detergent and dissolve grease. If your water heater is set too low or the dishwasher isn't getting hot enough water, cleaning suffers.
Fix: Set your water heater to at least 120°F (49°C). Run the kitchen tap until hot before starting the dishwasher — this ensures the first fill is hot water, not cold water from the pipes.
6. Dishwasher Interior Is Dirty
Grease, limescale, and mineral deposits build up inside the dishwasher over time, reducing cleaning performance and causing odors.
Fix: Run a monthly cleaning cycle with Affresh Dishwasher Cleaner Tablets (amzn.to/42P5MKQ). They power away odor-causing bacteria, limescale, and mineral deposits from the pump, tub, and hoses — 6 tablets for a 6-month supply.
7. No Rinse Aid
Rinse aid isn't just for drying — it also helps water rinse food particles off dishes more effectively. Without it, food residue can redeposit on dishes during the rinse cycle.
Fix: Fill the rinse aid dispenser with Amazon Basics Rinse Aid (amzn.to/4v4Ts5b). Check and refill monthly.
8. Wrong Cycle Selected
Using a Light or Quick cycle for heavily soiled dishes won't provide enough wash time or temperature to clean them properly.
Fix: Match the cycle to the load. Use Heavy or Pots & Pans for greasy, baked-on messes. Use Normal for everyday loads.
9. Hard Water Buildup
Hard water leaves mineral deposits on dishes and inside the machine, reducing cleaning effectiveness over time.
Fix: Use more rinse aid, run monthly cleaning cycles, and consider a dishwasher salt or water softener if you have very hard water.
10. Faulty Wash Pump or Motor
If the wash pump or motor is failing, water pressure will be insufficient to clean dishes properly. Signs include unusually quiet operation or dishes that are consistently dirty despite correct loading and detergent.
Fix: This requires a technician to diagnose and repair.
