Why Is My Dishwasher Leaking? Causes and Fixes

A leaking dishwasher can damage your floors, cabinets, and subfloor quickly. Most leaks have a clear cause and can be fixed without a technician. Here's how to diagnose and stop a dishwasher leak.

First: Identify Where the Leak Is Coming From

The location of the leak tells you a lot about the cause:

  • Front of the dishwasher / door: Door gasket, door latch, or too many suds
  • Bottom of the dishwasher: Pump seal, hose connection, or tub crack
  • Under the dishwasher: Water supply line or drain hose connection
  • Inside the tub: Spray arm or float switch issue

1. Worn or Damaged Door Gasket (Most Common)

The door gasket is the rubber seal that runs around the inside perimeter of the dishwasher door. When it cracks, hardens, or pulls away from the door frame, water leaks out during the cycle.

Fix: Inspect the gasket for cracks, tears, or areas where it's pulled away. Clean it with warm soapy water — sometimes a dirty gasket just needs cleaning to seal properly. If damaged, replace it. Door gaskets are model-specific — search your model number + "door gasket" for the correct replacement part.

2. Too Many Suds (Excess Detergent or Wrong Detergent)

Using regular dish soap instead of dishwasher detergent — or using too much detergent — creates excessive suds that can push water out through the door seal.

Fix: Only use dishwasher-specific detergent. The Finish Powerball Dishwasher Pods (amzn.to/3RE929j) are pre-measured and formulated to produce the right amount of suds. If you've accidentally used dish soap, run 2–3 rinse-only cycles to clear the suds, then add a small amount of cooking oil to break them down faster.

3. Loose or Damaged Water Supply Line

The water supply line connects your home's water supply to the dishwasher. A loose connection or cracked line will leak — usually underneath or behind the dishwasher.

Fix: Pull the dishwasher out and inspect the supply line at both ends. Tighten any loose connections. Replace the line if cracked or corroded. Use plumber's putty to seal connections if needed. The Harvey's Stainless Plumber's Putty (amzn.to/4uvSIGk) is a reliable, waterproof sealant for plumbing connections.

4. Loose or Clogged Drain Hose Connection

The drain hose can leak at its connection points — at the dishwasher, at the garbage disposal, or at the sink drain. A clogged drain hose can also cause water to back up and leak.

Fix: Inspect both ends of the drain hose for loose clamps or cracks. Tighten or replace clamps. Clear any blockages with a drain snake. The Flexisnake Drain Weasel (amzn.to/4fBqu8p) is effective for clearing drain line clogs.

5. Faulty Door Latch

If the door doesn't latch securely, it won't seal properly and water will leak from the front during the cycle.

Fix: Inspect the door latch for damage or misalignment. Adjust or replace the latch assembly if needed.

6. Cracked Tub or Spray Arm

A crack in the dishwasher tub or a damaged spray arm can cause water to leak in unexpected places.

Fix: Inspect the tub interior for cracks (look carefully along the bottom and sides). A cracked tub usually means the dishwasher needs to be replaced. A damaged spray arm can be replaced inexpensively.

7. Faulty Float Switch

The float switch monitors the water level inside the dishwasher. If it's stuck in the down position, the dishwasher may overfill and leak.

Fix: Locate the float (a small plastic dome at the bottom of the tub). Make sure it moves freely up and down. Clean around it if debris is preventing movement. If the switch itself is faulty, it will need to be replaced.

8. Pump Seal Failure

The pump seal prevents water from leaking around the pump motor. When it fails, water drips from the bottom of the dishwasher.

Fix: This typically requires a technician or an experienced DIYer to replace the pump seal.

Prevent Future Leaks

Keep your dishwasher in top condition with regular maintenance:

  • Clean the door gasket monthly with warm soapy water
  • Use the correct detergent and amount — pods eliminate over-dosing
  • Run a monthly cleaning cycle with Affresh Dishwasher Cleaner Tablets (amzn.to/42P5MKQ) to keep seals and hoses clear of buildup
  • Inspect supply and drain hose connections annually

Quick Diagnostic Guide

  • Leak from door: Check gasket and door latch; reduce detergent
  • Leak from bottom: Check pump seal and tub for cracks
  • Leak from under/behind: Check supply line and drain hose connections
  • Overfilling and leaking: Check float switch
