1. Rack Position Is Too Low

The problem: The lower the rack, the closer food is to the bottom heating element. This is the most common cause of burnt bases.

The fix: Move the rack up one or two positions. For most baking, the middle rack provides the most balanced heat. Only use the bottom rack intentionally — for crisping pizza bases or pastry bottoms.
