Why Is Dishwasher Not Removing Grease

Why Is Your Dishwasher Leaving Grease on Dishes?
Grease left on dishes after a full dishwasher cycle is a sign that something in the wash process is not working correctly. Grease requires hot water, strong detergent, and good water pressure to break down — if any of these are missing, greasy residue stays on your dishes.
1. Water Temperature Is Too Low
Grease does not dissolve in cold or lukewarm water. Dishwashers need water at a minimum of 120°F (49°C) to effectively cut through grease. If your water heater is set too low or the dishwasher is not heating the water properly, grease will remain on dishes.
Fix: Set your water heater to at least 120°F. Run the hot water at your kitchen sink for 30 seconds before starting the dishwasher so it fills with already-hot water from the first minute of the cycle.
2. Weak or Low-Quality Detergent
Not all dishwasher detergents are formulated to cut through heavy grease. Gel detergents in particular can lose effectiveness over time, and budget detergents often lack the enzyme concentration needed for greasy loads.
Fix: Switch to a high-performance detergent with grease-cutting enzymes. Cascade Platinum Dishwasher Pods are specifically formulated to break down grease and baked-on food without pre-soaking.
3. Clogged Filter
A clogged dishwasher filter restricts water flow and causes the machine to recirculate greasy water back onto your dishes instead of draining it away.
Fix: Remove the filter from the bottom of the dishwasher tub, rinse it under warm running water, and scrub away any grease buildup with a soft brush. Clean the filter every two to four weeks if you wash greasy dishes regularly.
4. Blocked or Dirty Spray Arms
Grease and mineral deposits can clog the spray arm nozzles over time, reducing water pressure and coverage. Low water pressure means grease does not get blasted off dish surfaces.
Fix: Remove the spray arms and rinse them under warm water. Use a toothpick to clear any blocked nozzle holes. Reattach and confirm they spin freely.
5. Overloaded Dishwasher
An overcrowded dishwasher means water cannot reach all surfaces. Greasy pots and pans need direct water spray to get clean — if they are shadowed by other items, grease stays put.
Fix: Place greasy pots and pans face-down on the sides of the bottom rack with clear space around them. Never stack or crowd greasy items.
6. Dirty Dishwasher Interior
Grease buildup inside the dishwasher tub, pump, and hoses reduces the machine’s ability to clean effectively and can transfer grease back onto dishes.
Fix: Run a monthly cleaning cycle with Affresh Dishwasher Cleaner Tablets to remove grease and buildup from the interior.
