Why Is Dishwasher Leaving Grit on Dishes

What Is the Grit on Dishes After the Dishwasher?
Finding a gritty or sandy residue on dishes after a dishwasher cycle is unpleasant — and a clear sign that something inside the machine needs attention. The grit is almost always food debris or mineral particles being recirculated onto your dishes rather than draining away.
1. Clogged or Dirty Filter (Most Common Cause)
The dishwasher filter catches food particles during the wash cycle. When the filter is full or clogged, it can no longer trap debris effectively. Food particles get recirculated by the wash water and redeposit as grit on your dishes.
Fix: Remove the filter from the bottom of the dishwasher tub — usually twist counterclockwise and lift. Rinse it under warm running water and scrub away debris with a soft brush. For heavy buildup, soak it in warm soapy water for 10 minutes before scrubbing. Clean the filter every two to four weeks.
2. Blocked Spray Arm Nozzles
When spray arm nozzles are partially blocked by mineral deposits or food debris, water pressure drops and the spray pattern becomes uneven. This means some areas of the dishwasher get low-pressure water that cannot flush food particles away cleanly.
Fix: Remove the spray arms and hold them under running water. Use a toothpick to clear each nozzle hole individually. Reattach and spin by hand to confirm they move freely.
3. Overloaded Dishwasher
Too many dishes block water circulation and prevent food particles from being flushed to the drain. Debris settles back onto dish surfaces as grit.
Fix: Leave space between every item. Ensure the spray arms can spin freely after loading.
4. Drain Is Partially Blocked
If the dishwasher drain is slow or partially blocked, dirty water sits in the bottom of the tub longer than it should and gets recirculated. This is a common cause of gritty residue on the bottom rack items in particular.
Fix: Check the drain area at the bottom of the dishwasher for food debris and remove any blockage. Run a cleaning cycle to clear the drain hose and pump.
5. Dirty Dishwasher Interior
Grease and food debris that builds up on the interior walls, door seal, and pump gets dislodged during wash cycles and deposits as grit on dishes.
Fix: Run a monthly cleaning cycle with Affresh Dishwasher Cleaner Tablets. These are designed to power away food residue, grease, and limescale from inside the pump, tub, and hoses.
6. Hard Water Mineral Particles
In very hard water areas, mineral deposits can flake off the interior of the dishwasher and appear as gritty white particles on dishes.
Fix: Use Lemi Shine Dish Detergent Booster to dissolve mineral buildup inside the machine and prevent flaking. If your dishwasher has a salt compartment, use Finish Dishwasher Salt to soften the water and reduce mineral accumulation.
Step-by-Step Fix Plan
- Clean the filter thoroughly
- Clear all spray arm nozzles
- Check and clear the drain area
- Run a full cleaning cycle with a dishwasher cleaner tablet
- Reload with proper spacing and run a normal cycle
Prevention Checklist
- Clean the filter every two to four weeks
- Clear spray arm nozzles every few months
- Run a dishwasher cleaning cycle monthly
- Never overload the dishwasher
- Use a hard water booster if you have hard water
