Why Is Dishwasher Control Panel Not Working

Dishwasher Control Panel Not Responding?
A dishwasher control panel that is unresponsive, blank, or behaving erratically is one of the more frustrating appliance problems — but it is often caused by something simple. Here is how to diagnose and fix the most common control panel issues before calling a technician.
1. Child Lock Is Activated
Most modern dishwashers have a child lock or control lock feature that disables all buttons to prevent accidental operation. If the control lock is on, pressing any button will have no effect.
Fix: Check your dishwasher manual for how to deactivate the control lock — it is usually done by pressing and holding a specific button (often labeled “Lock” or with a padlock icon) for three to five seconds. A lock indicator light will turn off when the lock is deactivated.
2. The Dishwasher Needs a Reset
Like any electronic device, a dishwasher’s control board can occasionally freeze or enter an error state that makes the panel unresponsive. A reset clears the error and restores normal operation.
Fix: Press and hold the Start or Cancel button for three to five seconds. If that does not work, turn off the dishwasher at the circuit breaker or unplug it, wait 60 seconds, then restore power. This performs a hard reset of the control board.
3. The Door Is Not Fully Latched
The dishwasher control panel will not respond to cycle start commands if the door is not fully closed and latched. This is a safety feature — the machine will not operate with an open door.
Fix: Close the door firmly until you hear the latch click. Check that no items are blocking the door from closing fully.
4. Power Supply Issue
If the control panel is completely blank with no lights or display, the dishwasher may not be receiving power.
Fix:
- Check that the dishwasher is plugged in securely
- Check the circuit breaker — a tripped breaker will cut power to the dishwasher
- Check the outlet by plugging in another device to confirm it has power
- Some dishwashers have an on/off switch under the sink — check that it is in the on position
5. Moisture or Water Damage to the Control Panel
Steam and moisture from the dishwasher can occasionally penetrate the control panel, causing buttons to malfunction or the display to behave erratically.
Fix: Turn off the dishwasher and leave the door open for several hours to allow any moisture to evaporate. If the panel returns to normal after drying out, moisture was the cause. If the problem persists, the control panel may need to be replaced.
6. Faulty Control Board
If none of the above fixes resolve the issue, the control board itself may have failed. Control board failure can cause the panel to be completely unresponsive, display error codes, or behave unpredictably.
Fix: Control board replacement is a more complex repair. Check whether your dishwasher is under warranty before proceeding — a failed control board is often covered. If out of warranty, get a repair quote and compare it to the cost of a replacement dishwasher before committing to the repair.
Using a Multimeter to Test the Control Board
If you are comfortable with basic electrical testing, a multimeter can help confirm whether the control board is receiving power and whether the door switch is functioning correctly. The Klein Tools Digital Multimeter Kit includes a non-contact voltage tester and receptacle tester — useful for diagnosing power supply issues at the outlet and circuit level.
When to Call a Technician
- The control board has failed and the dishwasher is out of warranty
- You are not comfortable working with electrical components
- The panel is unresponsive after trying all the above fixes
Final Tips
- Check the child lock first — it is the most commonly overlooked cause
- A hard reset (power off for 60 seconds) resolves many control panel issues
- Confirm the door is fully latched before troubleshooting further
- Check power supply before assuming the control board has failed
