Finding ice on your air conditioner is counterintuitive — it's supposed to cool your home, not turn into a block of ice. A frozen AC is a sign that something is preventing the system from working correctly, and it needs to be addressed before it causes damage. Here's why it happens and how to fix it.

Why Does an AC Freeze?

The evaporator coil inside your AC unit operates at around 40°F (4°C) under normal conditions. Warm room air flowing over the coil keeps it from freezing. When that airflow is restricted, or when refrigerant levels drop, the coil temperature falls below freezing and moisture in the air freezes on contact — building up into ice over time.

1. Dirty Air Filter (Most Common)

A clogged filter is the leading cause of frozen AC coils. It restricts airflow over the evaporator coil, causing the coil temperature to drop below freezing.

2. Blocked or Closed Vents

Closing too many supply or return vents reduces airflow through the system, causing the same problem as a dirty filter.

3. Low Refrigerant

When refrigerant levels drop due to a leak, the pressure in the evaporator coil drops, causing it to get much colder than normal and freeze. This is the second most common cause of frozen coils.

Fix: Use a refrigerant leak detector to check for leaks. Refrigerant recharging must be performed by a licensed HVAC technician. Low refrigerant always indicates a leak — simply recharging without fixing the leak is a temporary fix.

4. Dirty Evaporator Coils

A layer of dust and grime on the coil acts as insulation, preventing heat transfer. The coil runs colder than it should and eventually freezes.

5. Running AC in Cold Weather

Most air conditioners aren't designed to operate when outdoor temperatures drop below 60°F (16°C). In cold conditions, the refrigerant pressure drops and the coil can freeze even with normal airflow.

6. Faulty Blower Fan

If the blower fan motor is failing and running slower than normal, airflow over the evaporator coil is reduced even if the filter is clean.

Fix: Listen for unusual sounds from the fan. If airflow from vents seems weak despite a clean filter, the blower motor may need servicing. Call a technician.

What to Do When Your AC Is Frozen

  1. Turn the AC off immediately. Running a frozen unit can damage the compressor.
  2. Switch to fan-only mode to circulate warm air over the coil and speed up thawing. Or simply turn the system off and let it thaw naturally.
  3. Wait 2–4 hours for the ice to melt completely. Place towels around the indoor unit to catch dripping water.
  4. Check and replace the filter before restarting.
  5. Restart in cool mode and monitor. If it freezes again within a few hours, the cause is likely low refrigerant or a mechanical issue — call a technician.
