Why Are Dishes Not Clean After Dishwasher

Dishes Coming Out Dirty? Here Is Why
If your dishes are not clean after a full dishwasher cycle, the machine is not necessarily broken. In most cases, the cause is one of a handful of common and easily fixable issues — from loading mistakes to a clogged filter.
1. The Spray Arms Are Blocked
The spray arms rotate and shoot water at your dishes. If any item is blocking them from spinning, large sections of the dishwasher receive no water at all.
Fix: After loading, spin both spray arms by hand. If either one is blocked, rearrange the dishes until both spin freely.
2. The Filter Is Clogged
Most modern dishwashers have a manual filter at the bottom of the tub that catches food debris. A clogged filter restricts water flow and recirculates dirty water onto your dishes.
Fix: Remove the filter (usually twist and lift), rinse it under warm running water, and use a soft brush to remove any buildup. Clean it every two to four weeks.
3. Dishes Are Loaded Incorrectly
Dishes facing the wrong direction, items nesting together, or overcrowding all prevent water from reaching dirty surfaces.
Fix: Face all dirty surfaces toward the center spray arm. Leave space between every item. Separate spoons and bowls so they do not nest.
4. The Detergent Dispenser Is Blocked
If a large item is positioned in front of the detergent dispenser, the door cannot open and detergent never enters the wash cycle.
Fix: Check that nothing is blocking the dispenser door before starting every cycle.
5. You Are Using the Wrong Detergent or Too Little
Low-quality detergent or an insufficient amount leaves dishes with grease and food residue. Pre-measured pods remove the guesswork and ensure the right amount every time.
Fix: Switch to a high-performance detergent. Cascade Platinum Dishwasher Pods are formulated to cut through grease and baked-on food without pre-rinsing.
6. The Water Is Not Hot Enough
Dishwashers need hot water to activate detergent and dissolve grease. If your water heater is set too low, the dishwasher cannot clean effectively.
Fix: Set your water heater to at least 120°F (49°C). Run the hot water at your kitchen sink for 30 seconds before starting the dishwasher so it fills with hot water from the start.
7. The Dishwasher Interior Is Dirty
Grease, mineral deposits, and food debris build up inside the dishwasher over time and reduce cleaning performance.
Fix: Run a monthly cleaning cycle with Affresh Dishwasher Cleaner Tablets to remove buildup from the pump, tub, and hoses.
8. Hard Water Mineral Buildup
In hard water areas, mineral deposits coat the interior of the dishwasher and the spray arm nozzles, reducing water pressure and cleaning power.
Fix: Use a hard water booster alongside your regular detergent. Lemi Shine Dish Detergent Booster uses citric acid to dissolve mineral deposits and restore cleaning performance.
