How to Use a Rice Cooker
Share
Introduction
A rice cooker takes the guesswork out of cooking rice. No more checking the pot, adjusting the heat, or ending up with mushy or undercooked rice. Once you understand the basic steps and water ratios, you'll get perfect rice every time with almost zero effort.
What You'll Need
- Rice cooker
- Rice (any variety)
- Water
- The measuring cup that came with your rice cooker (important — it's often a different size than a standard cup)
Step-by-Step: How to Use a Rice Cooker
Step 1: Measure Your Rice
Use the measuring cup that came with your rice cooker. Most rice cooker cups are 180ml (about 3/4 of a standard US cup), not 240ml. Using the wrong cup will throw off your water ratio.
Step 2: Rinse the Rice
Place the rice in the inner pot and rinse with cold water 2–3 times until the water runs mostly clear. Rinsing removes excess starch, which prevents the rice from becoming sticky or gummy. Drain well after rinsing.
Step 3: Add Water
Add water according to the ratio for your rice type. Most rice cookers have water level lines marked inside the pot — simply fill to the line that matches the number of cups of rice you added.
General water ratios (using the rice cooker's measuring cup):
- White rice: 1 cup rice : 1 to 1.1 cups water
- Brown rice: 1 cup rice : 1.2 to 1.5 cups water
- Sushi rice: 1 cup rice : 1 cup water (slightly less)
- Jasmine rice: 1 cup rice : 1 cup water
- Basmati rice: 1 cup rice : 1.1 cups water
Step 4: Place the Inner Pot in the Cooker
Wipe the outside of the inner pot dry before placing it in the rice cooker. Moisture on the outside can interfere with the heating element.
Step 5: Close the Lid and Select Your Setting
Close the lid securely. Select the appropriate cooking setting for your rice type (white, brown, quick cook, etc.). Press start.
Step 6: Let It Rest After Cooking
When the rice cooker switches to "warm" mode, don't open the lid immediately. Let the rice rest for 10–15 minutes. This allows steam to redistribute evenly through the rice, resulting in a better texture.
Step 7: Fluff and Serve
Open the lid and use the included rice paddle (or a fork) to gently fluff the rice with a folding motion. Serve immediately or keep on warm for up to 1–2 hours.
Tips for Perfect Rice Every Time
- ✅ Always use the rice cooker's measuring cup, not a standard kitchen cup
- ✅ Rinse rice before cooking for better texture
- ✅ Let rice rest 10–15 minutes after the cook cycle ends
- ✅ Use the water level lines inside the pot when available
- ❌ Don't open the lid during cooking — it releases steam and disrupts the cooking process
- ❌ Don't leave rice on warm for more than 2 hours — it dries out and can develop an off taste

- Steamed fish and dumplings
Final Thoughts
Using a rice cooker is simple: measure with the right cup, rinse, add water to the line, press start, and let it rest. Once you get the water ratio right for your preferred rice type, you'll never go back to cooking rice on the stovetop.
