How to Use a Nespresso Machine
Share
Nespresso machines are among the easiest coffee makers to use — insert a capsule, press a button, and get a consistent espresso-style coffee in under a minute. Here's a complete guide covering setup, daily use, and maintenance.
Nespresso Machine Types
Nespresso makes two main lines of machines that use different capsule systems:
- Original Line: Uses Original capsules. Produces espresso and lungo (longer espresso). Smaller capsule range, more espresso-focused.
- Vertuo Line: Uses Vertuo capsules. Produces espresso, double espresso, gran lungo, mug, and alto sizes. Uses centrifusion technology (spins the capsule) for different cup sizes. Wider range of drink sizes.
The Nespresso Vertuo Pop+ by Breville is a Vertuo line machine that covers all five cup sizes from espresso to a full 18 oz alto — the most versatile option for households that want both espresso and larger coffee drinks.
First-Time Setup
- Remove all packaging and stickers from the machine
- Fill the water tank with fresh, cold water
- Place a large container under the coffee outlet
- Run 2–3 cleaning cycles (water only, no capsule) to flush the system — consult your manual for the specific process for your model
- Discard the rinse water
Daily Use: Step-by-Step
- Fill the water tank if needed. Use fresh, cold water. Filtered water produces better-tasting coffee and reduces mineral buildup.
- Turn on the machine. Most Nespresso machines heat up in 15–25 seconds. The button or light will indicate when it's ready.
- Place your cup on the drip tray under the coffee outlet. Adjust the drip tray height if your machine allows it.
- Insert the capsule. Open the capsule compartment (lever or button depending on model), insert the capsule, and close firmly.
- Select your cup size. On Vertuo machines, the machine reads the barcode on the capsule and automatically sets the correct parameters. On Original machines, select espresso (40ml) or lungo (110ml).
- Press the brew button. The machine will brew and stop automatically.
- Eject the used capsule into the capsule container. Most machines do this automatically when you open the lever for the next capsule.
Cup Size Guide (Vertuo Line)
| Size | Volume | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Espresso | 1.35 oz (40ml) | Straight espresso, cortado |
| Double Espresso | 2.7 oz (80ml) | Americano, flat white |
| Gran Lungo | 5 oz (150ml) | Long black, strong coffee |
| Mug | 7.7 oz (230ml) | Regular coffee, latte |
| Alto | 12–18 oz (355–535ml) | Large coffee, iced coffee |
Making Milk-Based Drinks
Nespresso machines don't have built-in steam wands (except the Creatista models). For lattes and cappuccinos, froth milk separately using a handheld frother or a standalone milk frother, then pour over your espresso shot.
Maintenance
- Empty the capsule container regularly — most hold 8–12 used capsules
- Empty and rinse the drip tray daily
- Descale every 3 months (or when the machine indicates). Use a universal descaling solution compatible with Nespresso machines. See our guide on how to descale a Nespresso machine.
- Run a rinse cycle before and after each use if the machine has been sitting unused for several days
Tips for Better Nespresso Coffee
- Use filtered water: Reduces mineral buildup and improves taste
- Preheat your cup: Pour hot water into the cup, wait 30 seconds, discard. A warm cup keeps espresso hotter longer.
- Store capsules properly: Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Don't refrigerate.
- Descale on schedule: Mineral buildup is the most common cause of poor-tasting Nespresso coffee and machine malfunctions
Nespresso machines are the most consistent and convenient way to make espresso-style coffee at home. The Vertuo line's automatic size detection makes it particularly foolproof — insert the capsule and press one button for a perfectly sized drink every time.
