How to Store Leeks in Refrigerator
Share
Leeks are a mild, versatile allium — a cross between onion and garlic in flavor — and they store surprisingly well in the refrigerator. With the right method, fresh leeks can stay crisp and flavorful for up to 2 weeks. Here's how to store leeks properly.
Should You Wash Leeks Before Storing?
No — do not wash leeks before storing. Leeks trap dirt between their layers, and washing before storage introduces moisture that accelerates rot. Wash thoroughly only right before cooking by slicing and rinsing under cold water.
How to Store Whole Leeks
- Keep the roots and dark green tops intact — Don't trim leeks until ready to use. The outer layers protect the tender inner white and light green parts.
- Wrap in a damp paper towel — Wrap the leeks loosely in a lightly damp Sparkle Paper Towel. This maintains humidity without introducing excess moisture.
- Place in a bag — Store in a SPLF Reusable Bag left slightly open, or loosely sealed.
- Store in the crisper drawer — High humidity setting is ideal. Keep away from strong-smelling foods — leeks can absorb and impart odors.
Important: Keep Leeks Away from Other Foods
Like all alliums, leeks have a strong aroma that can transfer to nearby foods — especially dairy products, eggs, and delicate fruits. Store them in a sealed bag and keep them in a dedicated spot in the crisper.
How to Store Cut Leeks
- Slice leeks as needed.
- Rinse thoroughly under cold water to remove dirt.
- Dry well and store in a ComSaf Airtight Container.
- Use within 3–5 days.
How Long Do Leeks Last in the Refrigerator?
- Whole leeks (damp paper towel + bag): 1–2 weeks
- Cut leeks (airtight container): 3–5 days
- Cooked leeks: 3–5 days
- Frozen (blanched): up to 3 months
How to Freeze Leeks
Slice, wash, and blanch in boiling water for 1–2 minutes. Transfer to ice water, drain, and dry. Freeze in a single layer, then transfer to a SPLF Reusable Freezer Bag. Frozen leeks work well in soups, stews, and quiches. Note: texture softens after freezing, so best used in cooked dishes.
Signs Leeks Have Gone Bad
- Slimy outer layers (remove and check inner layers — may still be fine)
- Yellow or brown wilted tops throughout
- Foul or overly pungent smell
- Mold between layers
