How to Set Air Conditioner Timer
Share
The timer function on your air conditioner is one of the most practical tools for saving electricity and waking up or coming home to a comfortable room. Most people never use it because the remote instructions are unclear. Here is a straightforward guide to setting your AC timer correctly.
Two Types of AC Timers
Most air conditioners offer two basic timer functions:
- Off Timer (Sleep Timer): The AC is currently running and you set it to turn off after a specified number of hours.
- On Timer: The AC is currently off and you set it to turn on after a specified number of hours.
Some units also offer a combined on/off timer or a weekly schedule timer — covered separately below.
How to Set the Off Timer (Turn Off After X Hours)
- Make sure the AC is running in your desired mode (cool, dry, etc.).
- Press the Timer or Off Timer button on your remote.
- Use the up/down arrows to set the number of hours until the unit turns off — typically in 0.5 or 1-hour increments, up to 24 hours.
- Press Set or Timer again to confirm. The timer indicator should appear on the display.
Common use: Set a 2-hour off timer when going to sleep so the AC turns off in the middle of the night after the room has cooled down.
How to Set the On Timer (Turn On After X Hours)
- Make sure the AC is off.
- Set your desired mode, temperature, and fan speed on the remote first — these settings will be used when the AC turns on.
- Press the Timer or On Timer button.
- Use the arrows to set the number of hours until the unit turns on.
- Press Set or Timer to confirm.
Common use: Set a 1-hour on timer before you wake up so the bedroom is already cool when your alarm goes off.
How to Cancel a Timer
Press the Timer or Cancel button on your remote until the timer indicator disappears from the display. On some units, pressing the Timer button repeatedly cycles through on timer, off timer, and cancel.
Timer Settings Vary by Brand
The exact button layout and steps differ between brands. Common variations:
- Daikin / Mitsubishi: Dedicated On Timer and Off Timer buttons, set in 30-minute increments.
- LG / Samsung: Single Timer button that cycles between on and off timer modes.
- Panasonic: Timer button with separate up/down arrows for hours and minutes.
- Generic / budget units: May only offer an off timer, not an on timer.
If your remote layout does not match these steps, check the manual for your specific model.
Lost Your Remote? Use a Universal Remote or Smart Plug
If your original remote is lost or broken, you lose access to the timer function. A universal AC remote restores full timer control for most major brands.

Alternatively, a smart plug gives you scheduling control from your phone without needing the AC remote at all — useful for basic on/off scheduling even on non-smart units.

Final Thoughts
The AC timer is a simple feature that saves electricity and improves comfort with minimal effort. Use the off timer to avoid running the AC all night, and the on timer to pre-cool a room before you need it. Once you build the habit of using it, you will wonder why you ever left the AC running unattended.
