How to Replace Oven Light Bulb
Share
Replacing an oven light bulb is one of the simplest appliance repairs you can do — most people can complete it in under 10 minutes with no tools. Here's exactly how to do it safely and correctly.
Before You Start: Get the Right Bulb
This is the most important step. Oven light bulbs are specialist high-temperature bulbs — standard household LED or incandescent bulbs cannot withstand oven temperatures and will fail immediately or shatter dangerously.
You need a bulb specifically rated for appliance or oven use. The Appliance Oven Light Bulb A15 40W (500°F / 260°C Heat Resistant, E26 Medium Base, 120V, Warm White) is rated for high-temperature use in ovens, refrigerators, range hoods, and microwave ovens. It fits the standard E26 medium base found in most North American ovens.
Check your oven manual for the correct bulb specification — common types include:
- E26 medium base (most common in North America)
- E14 small Edison screw (common in European ovens)
- G9 halogen capsule (some modern ovens)
- Wattage: typically 25W or 40W
Safety First
- Ensure the oven is completely cool before replacing the bulb — the glass cover and socket get extremely hot during use
- Switch off the oven at the wall or circuit breaker before starting
- Wear a thin rubber glove or use a dry cloth when handling the bulb — skin oils can cause hot spots on halogen bulbs
Step-by-Step: How to Replace the Oven Light Bulb
Step 1: Locate the Light
The oven light is usually located at the back or side of the oven cavity, protected by a glass or metal cover. Some ovens have the light on the ceiling of the cavity.
Step 2: Remove the Glass Cover
- The cover is usually a small glass dome or disc
- Turn it anti-clockwise to unscrew, or press and turn if it's a bayonet fitting
- Some covers have a small metal retaining clip — use a flathead screwdriver to release it
- Set the cover aside safely
Step 3: Remove the Old Bulb
- For screw-base bulbs (E26/E14): turn anti-clockwise to unscrew
- For bayonet bulbs: push in slightly, turn anti-clockwise, and pull out
- For G9 halogen capsules: pull straight out of the socket
- If the bulb is stuck, use a rubber grip pad for extra traction
Step 4: Install the New Bulb
- Insert the new bulb in the correct orientation
- For screw-base: turn clockwise until snug — do not overtighten
- For bayonet: push in, turn clockwise until it clicks into place
- For G9: push straight into the socket until fully seated
Step 5: Replace the Glass Cover
- Reattach the glass cover by reversing the removal process
- Ensure it's fully secured — a loose cover can rattle or fall during oven use
Step 6: Test
- Restore power and turn on the oven light
- The light should illuminate immediately
- If it doesn't, check the bulb is fully seated and the cover is correctly replaced
Summary
Replace an oven light bulb by ensuring the oven is cool and off, removing the glass cover, unscrewing the old bulb, installing a high-temperature rated replacement, and replacing the cover. The whole process takes under 10 minutes and requires no tools in most cases.
