How to Load Plastic Containers in Dishwasher Safely

Can You Put Plastic Containers in the Dishwasher?
Many plastic containers are dishwasher safe, but loading them incorrectly — or putting the wrong plastics in — leads to warped lids, melted containers, and chemicals leaching into your food storage. Here is how to do it safely.
Check the Label First
Before putting any plastic container in the dishwasher, check the bottom for a dishwasher-safe symbol — usually a dish with water droplets or the words "dishwasher safe." If there is no symbol, hand wash to be safe.
- Recycling codes 2, 4, and 5 are generally considered dishwasher safe
- Recycling codes 1, 3, 6, and 7 are not recommended for dishwasher use
Always Use the Top Rack
This is the most important rule for plastic containers in the dishwasher: top rack only.
- The bottom rack sits directly above the heating element, which reaches temperatures that warp and melt plastic
- The top rack is further from the heat source and uses gentler water pressure
- Even containers labeled dishwasher safe can warp on the bottom rack
How to Load Plastic Containers Correctly
1. Angle Containers Downward
- Place containers upside down and angled so water drains out during the cycle
- Containers sitting flat will collect water and come out with residue pooled inside
2. Secure Lightweight Items
- Lightweight plastic containers can flip over during the wash cycle and fill with dirty water
- Tuck them under the tines or use the rack clips if your dishwasher has them
3. Load Lids Separately
- Stand lids upright in the rack slots or lean them against the tines at an angle
- Do not stack lids flat — water cannot reach between them
4. Leave Space Between Containers
- Plastic containers need space around them for water to circulate
- Overcrowding means the insides do not get properly cleaned
What Plastics Should Never Go in the Dishwasher
- Containers without a dishwasher-safe symbol
- Thin, single-use plastic containers (takeout boxes, yogurt tubs)
- Plastic items with printed labels or decorations that will fade
- Insulated plastic bottles and travel mugs — the heat can damage the vacuum seal
Use a Gentle Detergent for Plastics
Harsh detergents can cloud and scratch plastic over time. BLUELAND Dishwasher Detergent Tablets are a plastic-free, natural formula that is gentler on surfaces while still cleaning effectively.
Final Tips
- Top rack only — always
- Angle containers downward so water drains out
- Secure lightweight items so they do not flip during the cycle
- Check the recycling code if there is no dishwasher-safe symbol
