How to Install Over the Range Microwave

Can You Install an Over-the-Range Microwave Yourself?
Installing an over-the-range (OTR) microwave is a moderately difficult DIY project. It requires two people, basic carpentry and electrical skills, and the right tools. Most homeowners with DIY experience can complete the installation in 2 to 4 hours. If you're not comfortable working with electrical connections or drilling into walls and cabinets, professional installation is recommended.
What You'll Need
- The OTR microwave and all included hardware
- Power drill and drill bits
- Stud finder
- Level
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Screwdrivers (Phillips and flathead)
- Wire stripper (if hardwiring)
- A second person to help lift and hold the microwave
Before You Start: Key Checks
Check the Electrical Requirements
OTR microwaves require a dedicated 120V, 15 to 20 amp circuit. Check that you have an appropriate outlet inside the cabinet above the installation location. If not, you'll need an electrician to install one before proceeding.
Check the Cabinet Above
The microwave mounts to the bottom of the upper cabinet. The cabinet must be sturdy enough to support the microwave's weight (typically 50 to 80 lbs). Check that the cabinet is securely attached to the wall studs.
Check the Venting Option
Decide whether you'll vent to the exterior (through the wall or ceiling) or recirculate (using a charcoal filter). This affects how you configure the microwave's blower before installation. See our guide on venting options for details.
Step-by-Step Installation
Step 1: Remove the Old Range Hood or Microwave
Disconnect power at the circuit breaker. Remove the existing range hood or old microwave. Patch any holes that won't be covered by the new microwave.
Step 2: Locate Wall Studs
Use a stud finder to locate the wall studs behind the installation area. Mark their positions with a pencil. The mounting plate must be anchored to at least one stud for secure installation.
Step 3: Install the Mounting Plate
The mounting plate (included with the microwave) attaches to the wall behind the stove. Use the template provided in the installation manual to mark the mounting holes. Drill pilot holes and secure the mounting plate to the wall studs with the provided lag bolts. Use a level to ensure the plate is perfectly horizontal.
Step 4: Drill Holes in the Cabinet Above
Using the template, mark and drill the holes in the bottom of the upper cabinet for the mounting bolts and power cord. The power cord passes through the cabinet to the outlet inside.
Step 5: Configure the Blower Direction
Before lifting the microwave into position, configure the blower for your venting option (exterior vent or recirculating). This is done by rotating the blower motor inside the microwave — refer to your installation manual for the specific procedure for your model.
Step 6: Lift and Mount the Microwave
This step requires two people. One person lifts and holds the microwave while the other guides the mounting hooks onto the wall plate and feeds the power cord through the cabinet hole. The microwave hooks onto the mounting plate at the bottom and is secured with bolts through the cabinet above.
Step 7: Secure the Top Bolts
From inside the upper cabinet, thread the mounting bolts down through the cabinet floor and into the top of the microwave. Tighten securely.
Step 8: Connect Power and Install Ductwork
Plug in the power cord inside the cabinet. If venting to the exterior, connect the ductwork to the microwave's exhaust port and route it to the exterior vent. Install the grease filters on the bottom of the microwave.
Step 9: Test
Restore power at the circuit breaker. Test the microwave and the ventilation fan on all speed settings. Check that the light works. Verify the door opens and closes properly.
When to Hire a Professional
- If you need a new electrical circuit installed
- If you need to cut through walls or cabinets for ductwork
- If the upper cabinet is not securely anchored to studs
- If you're not comfortable with the electrical connections
- If the microwave is very heavy and you don't have a reliable second person
Final Thoughts
OTR microwave installation is a manageable DIY project for experienced home improvers. The most critical steps are securing the mounting plate to wall studs, having a second person for the lift, and ensuring the electrical circuit is adequate. When in doubt, professional installation costs $100 to $300 and ensures a safe, secure result.
