How to Descale a Nespresso Machine

Nespresso recommends descaling every 3 months or after 300 capsules — whichever comes first. A descaled machine brews hotter, faster, and produces better-tasting coffee. Here's a complete guide for both Original and Vertuo line machines.

What You'll Need

Nespresso-compatible descaling solution (see below)
A container that holds at least 34 oz (1 liter)
Fresh water for rinsing

Use the Essential Values Universal Descaling Solution — compatible with Nespresso, Keurig, Breville, De'Longhi, and most other brands. One bottle provides 4 uses. Do not use white vinegar — Nespresso explicitly advises against it as it can damage internal components and void the warranty.

General Descaling Process (Most Nespresso Models)

The exact button sequence varies by model — always check your manual. The general process is:

Empty the capsule container and drip tray. Remove any capsule from the machine.
Fill the water tank with 17 oz (500ml) of water and add the descaling solution according to the package instructions (typically half a bottle or one sachet).
Place a large container (at least 34 oz / 1 liter) under the coffee outlet to catch the descaling solution.
Enter descaling mode. On most Nespresso machines, this involves holding specific buttons for 3–7 seconds. Consult your manual for the exact sequence for your model. The machine will indicate it's in descaling mode (usually with a specific light pattern).
Start the descaling cycle. The machine will pump the descaling solution through the internal system. This takes approximately 20–25 minutes.
Rinse cycle. When the descaling solution is exhausted, the machine will pause. Empty the container, fill the water tank with fresh water, and restart to run the rinse cycle. The machine pumps clean water through to flush out all descaling solution.
Exit descaling mode as instructed by your manual (usually holding the same buttons again).
Run a blank brew (water only, no capsule) to confirm the machine is back to normal operation.

After Descaling: Tips

Run 1–2 blank brews (water only) after the rinse cycle to ensure no descaling solution remains
