How to Descale a Coffee Machine with Vinegar

How to Descale a Coffee Machine with Vinegar

Mineral deposits (limescale) build up inside coffee makers over time, slowing brewing, affecting temperature, and making coffee taste stale or bitter. Descaling removes this buildup and restores your machine to full performance. Here's how to do it with vinegar — and when to use a dedicated descaler instead.

Why Descale?

Water contains dissolved minerals — primarily calcium and magnesium. Every time your coffee maker heats water, these minerals deposit on the heating element, boiler, and internal pipes. Over time, brewing slows down, water temperature drops, coffee tastes stale or bitter, and the machine may stop working entirely.

How often you need to descale depends on your water hardness. In hard water areas, descale every 1–2 months. In soft water areas, every 3–6 months is sufficient.

Vinegar vs Dedicated Descaler

Factor White Vinegar Dedicated Descaler
Cost Very cheap Moderate
Effectiveness Good for light buildup Better for heavy buildup
Smell Strong vinegar smell Minimal or none
Rinse cycles needed 3–5 1–2
Warranty impact May void warranty Usually safe

Important: Nespresso, Keurig, and many other brands explicitly recommend against vinegar. For these machines, use the Essential Values Universal Descaling Solution — compatible with Nespresso, Keurig, Breville, De'Longhi, and most other brands.

How to Descale a Drip Coffee Maker with Vinegar

  1. Empty the carafe and remove any filter.
  2. Mix the solution: Fill the reservoir with a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water.
  3. Run a half brew cycle, then pause and let the solution sit for 30–60 minutes.
  4. Complete the brew cycle and discard the vinegar solution.
  5. Run 2–3 full cycles of fresh water to rinse out all vinegar residue.
  6. Smell test: If you detect vinegar, run another rinse cycle.

Signs Your Coffee Maker Needs Descaling

  • Brewing takes noticeably longer than usual
  • Coffee isn't as hot as it used to be
  • Coffee tastes flat, stale, or slightly bitter
  • Visible white or gray mineral deposits around the reservoir or outlet
  • Descale indicator light is on

Descaling Frequency Guide

Water Type Frequency
Soft water / filtered Every 3–6 months
Medium hardness Every 2–3 months
Hard water Every 1–2 months

For Nespresso and Keurig Machines

Don't use vinegar on Nespresso or Keurig — use a dedicated descaler. See our guides on how to descale a Nespresso and how to descale a Keurig.

Regular descaling takes 30–60 minutes every few months and makes a noticeable difference in coffee quality and machine longevity.
