How to Cook Fish in Air Fryer
Share
Fish is one of the quickest and most rewarding things to cook in an air fryer. It cooks in 8–12 minutes, comes out flaky inside with a lightly crisp exterior, and produces almost no smell compared to pan-frying. Here's a complete guide for every type of fish.
Key Rules for Air Fryer Fish
- Pat completely dry: Moisture prevents browning and can make fish stick. Dry thoroughly with paper towels before seasoning.
- Use a liner: Fish is delicate and can stick to the basket. A parchment paper liner prevents sticking and makes cleanup effortless.
- Don't overcook: Fish goes from perfect to dry very quickly. Check 2–3 minutes before the suggested time.
- Flip carefully: Use a thin spatula. Delicate fish like tilapia can break apart if handled roughly.
- Check doneness: Fish is done when it flakes easily with a fork and the flesh is opaque throughout. Internal temperature should reach 145°F (63°C).
Salmon
Salmon is the most popular fish to air fry — the high fat content keeps it moist and forgiving.
- Pat the fillet dry
- Brush with 1 tsp oil or melted butter
- Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and lemon zest (or your preferred seasoning)
- Preheat air fryer to 400°F
- Cook skin-side down for 8–12 minutes depending on thickness (1" fillet = about 10 minutes)
- No need to flip — the skin protects the bottom and the top browns beautifully
- Check at 8 minutes — it should flake easily at the thickest part
White Fish (Tilapia, Cod, Haddock, Mahi-Mahi)
Leaner than salmon and cooks faster. More prone to drying out, so watch the time carefully.
- Pat dry and coat lightly with oil
- Season simply — salt, pepper, paprika, lemon
- Preheat to 400°F
- Cook for 8–10 minutes for a 1" fillet, flipping carefully at 5 minutes
- Check at 7 minutes — it should be opaque and flake easily
Breaded Fish Fillets
- Pat fish dry
- Dip in egg wash, then coat in seasoned panko breadcrumbs
- Spray lightly with oil
- Preheat to 400°F
- Cook for 10–12 minutes, flipping at 6 minutes
- The panko coating will be golden and crispy
Shrimp
- Peel and devein; pat dry
- Toss with 1 tsp oil and seasoning
- Preheat to 400°F
- Cook for 6–8 minutes, shaking at 4 minutes
- Shrimp are done when pink and curled into a C shape (overcooked shrimp curl into an O)
