How to Clean Window Air Conditioner

How to Clean Window Air Conditioner

A dirty window AC unit works harder, costs more to run, and can spread dust and mold through your room. Cleaning it thoroughly once or twice a season keeps it running efficiently and extends its lifespan. Here's a complete step-by-step guide.

How Often Should You Clean a Window AC?

  • Filter: Every 2–4 weeks during heavy use
  • Full unit cleaning: At the start of the cooling season and again mid-summer if used heavily
  • Before winter storage: Always clean before covering or storing

What You'll Need

  • Vacuum with brush attachment
  • Soft brush or old toothbrush
  • AC coil cleaner spray
  • Fin comb
  • Compressed air duster
  • Mild dish soap and warm water
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Screwdriver (to remove the front panel)

Step 1: Turn Off and Unplug

Always unplug the unit before cleaning. Never clean a live AC.

Step 2: Remove and Clean the Filter

  1. Remove the front grille (usually clips off or has 1–2 screws)
  2. Slide out the mesh filter
  3. Vacuum off loose dust
  4. Wash with warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly
  5. Let dry completely — never reinstall a wet filter

Step 3: Clean the Front Grille

Wash the grille with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Rinse and dry before reinstalling.

Step 4: Clean the Evaporator Coils (Inside)

With the filter removed, you can access the evaporator coils at the front of the unit.

  1. Use a compressed air duster to blow loose dust from between the fins
  2. Spray AC coil cleaner evenly across the coil surface
  3. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes to penetrate and dissolve grime
  4. Wipe away loosened debris with a microfiber cloth, or let the condensate from the next run cycle rinse it
  5. Straighten any bent fins with a fin comb

Step 5: Clean the Condenser Coils (Outside)

The condenser coils are at the back of the unit (the part that faces outside).

  1. Use compressed air to blow debris from between the fins, working from inside out
  2. Apply coil cleaner and let sit
  3. Rinse with a gentle spray of water from a spray bottle (avoid soaking electrical components)
  4. Straighten bent fins with the fin comb

Step 6: Clean the Drain Pan and Drain Hole

The drain pan sits under the evaporator coil and collects condensate. Wipe it out with a damp cloth. Check that the drain hole at the back of the pan is clear — use a cotton swab or thin brush to clear any blockage. Pour a small amount of drain line cleaner into the pan to prevent algae growth.

Step 7: Clean the Exterior

Wipe down the exterior casing with a damp microfiber cloth. Don't use harsh chemicals that could damage the plastic.

Step 8: Reassemble and Test

  1. Reinstall the dry filter and front grille
  2. Plug in and run on fan-only mode for 10 minutes to dry the interior
  3. Switch to cool mode and confirm normal operation

Tips

  • Do the full cleaning outdoors if possible — it's easier to rinse and less messy
  • Check that the unit is still tilted slightly toward the outside after cleaning so condensate drains correctly
  • If the unit smells musty after cleaning, spray the coils with the Zero Odor Eliminator and run on fan mode to circulate
  • Clean before storing for winter — mold and bacteria grow in dirty units during storage

A clean window AC runs quieter, cools faster, and uses less electricity. The full cleaning takes about 45 minutes and makes a noticeable difference in performance.
