How to Clean Oven Racks
Share
Oven racks are often the most neglected part of oven cleaning — and the most satisfying to restore. Baked-on grease and carbonised food can make racks look beyond saving, but with the right method they come up like new. Here are the best techniques for every level of soiling.
Method 1: Bathtub Soak (Best for Heavily Soiled Racks)
This is the most effective method for racks with heavy, baked-on grease.
- Line the bathtub with old towels to protect the surface from scratches
- Place the oven racks in the bathtub
- Fill with hot water until the racks are fully submerged
- Add half a cup of washing-up liquid and half a cup of white vinegar, or a generous squirt of dish soap
- Leave to soak for at least 4 hours — overnight is ideal for heavily soiled racks
- Scrub with a non-scratch scouring pad or old dish brush
- Rinse thoroughly and dry before replacing in the oven
Method 2: Baking Soda and Vinegar (Chemical-Free)
- Place racks on old newspaper or a large bin bag
- Sprinkle generously with baking soda
- Spray with white vinegar — the mixture will fizz and lift grease
- Leave for 1–2 hours
- Scrub with a non-scratch pad and rinse clean
Method 3: Dishwasher (For Lightly Soiled Racks)
Check your oven manual first — some racks are dishwasher-safe, others are not. If safe:
- Place racks in the dishwasher on a hot cycle
- Use a heavy-duty dishwasher tablet
- This works well for light to moderate soiling but may not remove heavy baked-on grease
Method 4: Oven Cleaner Spray (For Stubborn Baked-On Grease)
- Place racks in a large bin bag or on newspaper outdoors or in a well-ventilated area
- Spray generously with oven cleaner. The Easy-Off Professional Fume Free Max Oven Cleaner is effective on baked-on grease and safe for most rack materials.
- Seal the bag and leave for 2–4 hours (or overnight for very heavy soiling)
- Remove from the bag, scrub with a non-scratch pad, and rinse thoroughly
The Right Scrubbing Tools
For effective rack cleaning without scratching:
- Non-scratch scouring pads: Remove grease without damaging the rack coating
- Old dish brush: Good for getting into the wire grid
- Steel wool (use carefully): Only for chrome racks with very heavy carbonised deposits — can scratch coated racks
Always wear rubber gloves when scrubbing. The Casabella Waterblock Premium Rubber Cleaning Gloves are thick and waterproof — ideal for extended scrubbing sessions in hot soapy water.
How to Prevent Racks from Getting So Dirty
- Always use a baking tray or roasting pan to catch drips from food above
- Line baking trays with foil or a silicone mat to catch spills before they reach the rack
- Wipe racks with a damp cloth after each use while still slightly warm (not hot)
- Include racks in your regular oven cleaning routine
How to Dry and Replace Racks
Dry racks thoroughly before replacing them in the oven — wet racks can cause steam and spotting. If racks feel stiff or difficult to slide after cleaning, rub a small amount of vegetable oil along the rack edges where they contact the oven walls. This lubricates the runners and makes the racks slide smoothly.
Summary
For heavily soiled racks, the bathtub soak overnight is the most effective method. For chemical-free cleaning, use baking soda and vinegar. For very stubborn deposits, use oven cleaner spray in a sealed bag. Always wear rubber gloves, scrub with a non-scratch pad, and dry thoroughly before replacing.
