How to Clean Oven Properly
Share
A clean oven cooks better, smokes less, and lasts longer. But oven cleaning is one of those tasks that's easy to put off — until the smoke alarm goes off mid-roast. Here's a complete, step-by-step guide to cleaning your oven properly, from a quick wipe-down to a full deep clean.
What You'll Need
- Oven cleaner spray or baking soda paste
- Rubber gloves
- Microfibre cloths or sponges
- A plastic scraper or old credit card
- A bowl of warm soapy water
- Old newspaper or towels to protect the floor
Step 1: Prepare the Oven
- Ensure the oven is completely cool before cleaning
- Remove all oven racks, trays, and accessories
- Lay newspaper or old towels on the floor in front of the oven to catch drips
- Put on rubber gloves — oven cleaners are caustic
Step 2: Apply Oven Cleaner
Commercial oven cleaner method:
- Spray oven cleaner generously on all interior surfaces — walls, floor, ceiling, and door glass. Avoid the heating elements and fan.
- Close the oven door and leave for the time specified on the product — typically 30 minutes to several hours, or overnight for heavy soiling
- For best results, use a cleaner specifically designed for ovens. The Easy-Off Professional Fume Free Max Oven Cleaner is a top-rated option — fume-free formula that works at room temperature, safe for self-cleaning ovens, and effective on baked-on grease without harsh fumes.
Step 3: Wipe Out the Oven
- Using a damp cloth or sponge, wipe away the loosened grease and residue
- Use a plastic scraper for stubborn baked-on deposits — never use metal scrapers which can scratch the oven lining
- Rinse the cloth frequently and change the water as it becomes dirty
- Pay particular attention to the corners, door seal, and around the heating elements
Step 4: Clean the Oven Door Glass
- Apply oven cleaner or baking soda paste to the inside of the door glass
- Leave for 20–30 minutes
- Wipe clean with a damp cloth — use a plastic scraper for stubborn spots
- For the outside of the door glass, use a standard glass cleaner
Step 5: Clean the Oven Racks
Soak racks in hot soapy water in the sink or bathtub for 30–60 minutes, then scrub with a non-scratch scouring pad. For heavily soiled racks, see our dedicated guide on how to clean oven racks.
Step 6: Rinse and Dry
- Wipe all surfaces with a clean damp cloth to remove any cleaner residue — residue left behind will smoke when the oven is next used
- Dry thoroughly with a clean cloth
- Replace the racks and accessories
Step 7: Run the Oven Empty
Before cooking again, run the oven empty at 200°C (400°F) for 15–20 minutes with the kitchen ventilated. This burns off any remaining cleaner residue and confirms the oven is clean and ready to use.
Using the Self-Clean Function
Many modern ovens have a self-clean (pyrolytic) function that heats the oven to 400–500°C (750–930°F), incinerating all food residue to ash. To use it:
- Remove all racks and accessories first — the extreme heat can damage them
- Ensure good ventilation — the process produces smoke and fumes
- The cycle takes 2–3 hours and the oven locks during the process
- Once cool, wipe out the ash with a damp cloth
Protect Your Hands
Oven cleaners are caustic and can cause skin irritation. Always wear rubber gloves when cleaning. The Casabella Waterblock Premium Rubber Cleaning Gloves (Large) are thick, waterproof, and provide excellent protection for heavy-duty cleaning tasks.
Summary
A proper oven clean takes 1–2 hours including soaking time. Remove racks, apply cleaner, leave to work, scrape and wipe, rinse thoroughly, and run empty before cooking. Regular cleaning prevents heavy build-up and keeps your oven performing at its best.
