How to Clean AC Drain Line
Share
The AC drain line carries moisture removed from the air during cooling out of the unit and away from your home. Over time, algae, mold, and debris build up inside the line and restrict flow. Regular cleaning prevents clogs, water damage, and the musty odors that come from stagnant water in the drain system.
What Is the AC Drain Line?
When your AC runs in cool or dry mode, moisture condenses on the evaporator coils and drips into a drain pan below the indoor unit. The drain line — typically a PVC pipe — carries this water from the drain pan to a floor drain, utility sink, or outside the home.
How Often to Clean the Drain Line
- Every 1 to 3 months during the cooling season
- At the start of each cooling season as part of annual maintenance
- Any time you notice water pooling near the indoor unit or musty odors
What You Need
- Distilled white vinegar or diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 16 parts water)
- Funnel
- Wet-dry vacuum (optional)
- AC drain line cleaning tablets (for ongoing prevention)

Step-by-Step: Cleaning the AC Drain Line
Step 1: Turn Off the AC
Turn the AC off at the remote or thermostat before working on the drain line.
Step 2: Locate the Drain Line Access Point
On split AC systems, the access point is usually a T-shaped PVC fitting with a cap near the indoor unit or along the drain line run. On central HVAC systems, it is typically near the air handler. Remove the cap to access the line.
Step 3: Pour Cleaning Solution Into the Line
Using a funnel, slowly pour approximately 250 ml (1 cup) of distilled white vinegar into the drain line access point. Vinegar is mildly acidic and effective at dissolving algae and mold without damaging PVC pipes. Alternatively, use a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 16 parts water) for more aggressive cleaning.
Step 4: Allow to Dwell
Leave the solution in the line for 30 minutes to allow it to break down algae and mold buildup along the pipe walls.
Step 5: Flush With Water
After 30 minutes, pour a cup of clean water into the access point to flush the solution and loosened debris through the line. Check the drain outlet to confirm water is flowing freely.
Step 6: Replace the Cap and Test
Replace the access cap and turn the AC back on. Run it for 15 to 20 minutes and check the drain outlet again to confirm normal drainage.
Ongoing Prevention With Drain Tablets
AC drain line cleaning tablets dissolve slowly in the drain pan and release algae-inhibiting agents that prevent buildup between cleanings. Drop one or two tablets into the drain pan every 1 to 3 months to keep the line clear with minimal effort.

Signs the Drain Line Needs Cleaning
- Water pooling around or dripping from the indoor unit
- Musty smell from the indoor unit or drain pan
- The AC shuts off unexpectedly — many units have a float switch that cuts power when the drain pan overflows
- Visible algae or slime in the drain pan
Final Thoughts
Cleaning the AC drain line takes less than 10 minutes and prevents water damage, mold growth, and unexpected AC shutdowns. A monthly pour of vinegar during the cooling season is the easiest maintenance habit you can build. Adding drain tablets to the pan provides ongoing protection between cleanings with virtually no effort.
